I have struggled with eating disorders all my life.
It started, as it usually does, with a diet.
When I was around the age of 11, I was bullied for being slightly overweight and it led me to believe that if I could "just lose some weight, I would be so much happier and everyone would like me". I lost the weight, BUT I was then bullied for being "different" - whatever that means!
Over the years, I've always felt a bit overweight and I've tried every diet going. I've lost lots of weight...only to gain it all back again. When I was about twenty, I heard about this amazing new diet where you could eat as much as you wanted, with none of calories, IF you threw it all back up again. Yay! As I absolutely loved eating food (and still do) , this seemed like the answer to my prayers...
I was lucky?? I only ventured down that path for about 6 months before deciding this wasn't really the answer and actually it didn't seem to be working very well anyway. So this time, I resorted to losing weight by starving myself instead. I lived on cups of tea for weeks and yes, I lost loads of weight, but one lapse of succumbing to a chocolate bar and then I couldn't stop bingeing for 3 days!
Periods of starving, bingeing and having a love/hate relationship with food have followed me nearly all my life. I sought help from all manner of practitioners-therapists, counsellors, doctors and naturopaths. But every form of help was missing something. They either looked at what I ate, or why I ate it, but not both, and certainly not the connection between the two or the mind/body relationship.
After years of study and working with clients, I formulated a more joined up and holistic approach which sees the person and not their eating problem. It fills the gap that's missing from traditional eating disorder treatments.
Intuitive Food Therapy is a multidisciplinary approach which looks to understand the emotional drivers and unhelpful thought processes behind problem eating, while also gently and patiently allowing the body and mind to reconnect. Using a combination of therapies, knowledge building, mindset and habit changes, practical skills and emotional resilience training, long-term recovery from eating disorders and eating problems is absolutely possible. Recovery and freedom are life-changing, you just need to take the first step and ask for help.
